Orbital Phase Spectroscopy of GX 301 – 2 with RXTE - PCA

چکیده
We have investigated the orbital phase dependence of the X-ray spectrum of the High Mass X-ray Binary pulsar GX 301–2. Here we present the results from a spectral analysis of two sets of observations of GX 301–2 with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). Of particular interest are the variations of the absorption column density and the iron line flux along with other parameters of the spectral model with the orbital phase. We found that the X-ray spectrum can almost always be fitted with a partial covering absorption model. We have detected enhanced absorption near the periastron. However, the column density variation with orbital phase is not smooth, as is expected in a smooth stellar wind model. We discuss the results of the column density variation in the light of the two proposed models for GX 301-2, an equatorial disk emanating from the companion star Wray 977 and a gas stream following the neutron star. We also found that the iron Kα and Kβ line fluxes have peaks near the periastron and are well correlated with the continuum hard X-ray flux. The line equivalent width shows an interesting pattern with the column density, reasonably constant for low values of the column density and increasing rapidly beyond a certain value.

Orbital Phase Spectroscopy of four High Mass X-ray Binary Pulsars to Study the Stellar Wind of the Companion
Our work focuses on a comprehensive orbital phase dependent spectroscopy of the four High Mass X-ray Binary Pulsars (HMXBPs) 4U 1538-52, GX 301-2, OAO 1657415 & Vela X-1. We hereby report the measurements of the variation of the absorption column density and iron-line flux along with other spectral parameters over the binary orbit for the above-mentioned HMXBPs in elliptical orbits, as observed...

We present observations of the High Mass X-ray Binary GX 301−2 taken during the Galactic Plane Scan (GPS) with INTEGRAL following our RXTE observations (Kreykenbohm et al., 2004). The optical companion of GX 301−2 is the B1Ia+ hyper-giant Wray 977 with a luminosity of 1.3 × 10 6 L ⊙ and a mass of ∼48 M ⊙ making the system one of the most massive X-ray binaries known. The system was observed 24 ...

High Mass X-ray Binary Pulsars (HMXBP), in which the companion star is a source of supersonic stellar wind, provide a laboratory to probe the velocity and density profile of such winds. Here, we have measured the variation of the absorption column density along with other spectral parameters over the binary orbit for two HMXBP in elliptical orbits, as observed with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explor...

We report for the first time the detection of long-term X-ray variability in the bright bulge source GX 354–0 (=4U 1728–34) observed with the All Sky Monitor (ASM) on board the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). The 2-year RXTE ASM database reveals significant power at ∼ 72 days. Similar behaviour was seen in the 6-year Ariel 5 ASM database, but at a period of ∼ 63 days. The timescales and lig...
متن کاملObservations of the X - ray Pulsar GX 301 - 2 with the ART - P Telescope of the Granat
The variability of the X-ray flux from the pulsar GX 301-2 is analyzed by using data from the ART-P telescope of the Granat Observatory. The intensity variations with time scales of several thousand seconds are studied at various orbital phases. The high-state flux from the source exceeds its low-state flux by as much as a factor of 10. The hardness and spectrum of the source are shown to chang...
